The Mindset Connection to Weight Loss: How Yoga Can Help
She looked into the mirror and groaned at what she saw. A double chin, flappy arms, wide hips, a rear end like an elephant- I hate my body so much! I look like a cow.
Although not a word for word conversation, this is the way many people think when they look in the mirror. They don’t like the image before them so they beat themselves up.
Do You Want to Lose Weight?
This might seem like a no-brainer question. What overweight person wouldn’t want to lose weight, right?
If you really are serious about losing weight, a negative self-loathing mindset won’t help you whatsoever. In fact, it can inhibit your progress, prevent you from reaching your goals, lower your self-esteem, and is not beneficial to your overall wellness.
Excess weight can be an indication of things being out of balance in your life. In addition to extra pounds, there can be an entire litany of underlying issues that you are carrying around. These include things like emotional issues, stress, addictions, fears, self-sabotage, etc., – all of which can be preventing you from reaching your weight loss goals.
Emotional and Spiritual
Practicing yoga provides multiple benefits. While it is an excellent workout activity that is great for the physical body, it also serves our emotional and spiritual needs.
Yoga is well known for its deep relaxation benefits. Through the use of deep breathing, focus and the meditative components of yoga, stress begins to melt away. This continues with regular practice and the extra weight comes off much more easily.
Stuck emotions? We all have them whether we realize it or not. Many of them like to hide deep down in our subconscious. They like to fuel feelings of low self-esteem, self-loathing, anxiety and so on. It’s no wonder we binge eat and indulge in so many self-defeating habits.
The meditation that is part of yoga not only brings these feelings to the forefront but also helps to let go of this unneeded baggage. In turn, inner peace and a calming of the mind takes place, bringing us to a happier, more positive way of thinking and living. Making healthy choices for ourselves is a lot easier when we are in a good place in our lives. In terms of weight loss, this means pounds come off much easier because our healthy choices include eating right and exercising more frequently.
One thing to remember is that it took time to get to where you are. Getting healthy, changing your mindset and feeling good will also take some time to achieve as well.
We live in the age of instant gratification. It’s important to have focus (another benefit of yoga) and patience in achieving weight loss goals. It won’t happen overnight. Give yourself permission to enjoy the moment and the journey. You will get to where you want to go.
