Best Yoga DVD’s for Beginners

The Best Reviewed Yoga DVD’s for Beginners

If you are interested in starting a Yoga workout but aren’t quite sure if it’s for you, then viewing a Yoga DVD from the comfort of your own home can be a good start. It’s human nature to be embarrassed or to look like a newbie when starting something new. Trying Yoga at home is a great way to get comfortable with the names of the poses as well as try them without feeling like you are being judged. Once you feel more comfortable with Yoga and your poses then maybe you can try a Yoga class in your area.

I always recommend watching a Yoga DVD first before even trying the poses with the instructor. This way you can just focus on what they are doing without worrying about if you are doing the pose correctly. Then, when you do watch the DVD and try the workout along with the instructor, you will be more comfortable and won’t have to keep looking at the TV.

An easy way to overcome being shy about starting Yoga is to learn the basics in the privacy of your own home by watching some of the best Yoga instructors on DVD. This way you can become familiar with the terminology and poses before going to your first class.

Gentle Yoga – 7 Practices For Your Day is actually 7 yoga routines and a separate Relaxation totaling about 187 minutes (over 3 hours) of instruction. All the routines are instructed outdoors in an absolutely gorgeous mountain location (Glacier National Park) often standing in front of a lake with the mountains in the background or along a river or among trees along a trail. Jane does the routines alone and her instruction is by voice over. Her instructions are clear and never blocked by the gentle music in the background. The camera work usually shows her from head to toe and takes in the scenery in the background.

The practices with a few notes are below:

1. Lying Full Body Practice (34 Minutes)

2. Morning Energy Practice (18 Minutes)

3. Desk & Computer Work Relief (19 Minutes)

4. Improving Balance (22 Minutes)

5. Standing Poses – Flow & Traditional (23 Minutes)

6. Core Strength & Flexibility (34 Minutes)

7. Evening Relaxing Practice (29 Minutes)

8. Relaxation (8 Minutes)

5 Tips for Yoga Beginners

  • Listen to the instructor and don’t worry about trying to be perfect. Everyone’s body is different so really focus on what the instructor is saying you should feel instead of copying their body.
  • Don’t judge a pose as simple or difficult until you’ve tried it. (Don’t judge a book by its cover)
  • If you don’t like a pose, it’s probably because it’s a pose you should be doing.
  • Don’t rush yourself and be patient. Focus on breathing and relaxing your body as much as you can.
  • If you are self-conscience about doing poses in public start off with a Yoga DVD in your home.
